DWTA shares tips to safely remove windshield scratches

The Detroit Windshield Technicians has shared tips to safely remove windshield scratches. In their official blog. The DWTA says windshield scratches can be very unsightly. “It can give an otherwise perfect car a slight imperfection that will be surely noticed by any car enthusiast,” says Peter Kinley, president of the DWTA. “But can windshield scratches be effectively erased? Can these unsightly marks be removed from autoglass? These are the questions we are answering on our blog post,” he adds.  

WikiHow says minor scratches can be removed with a white toothpaste particularly that which has baking soda. In their instructional guide on removing glass scratches using toothpaste, they mentioned that all a vehicle owner needs to do is clean the affected area well, and wipe the glass with toothpaste and microfiber cloth.

“When your scratch is smaller than the width of a fingernail, you can remove it using homemade remedies such as toothpaste or nail polish. First clean off your glass, apply your chosen cleaner using a microfiber cloth, then wash off the cleaner and your glass will look as good as new!”

Ways to remove scratches

Third Party Service Ratings Website Angie’s List meanwhile shared a scratch removal guide that makes use of usual items that can be found at home. One thing that was mentioned is clear nail polish.

“Clean the scratch and the area around it with window cleaner. Again, use a soft cloth to wipe off the window cleaner. Make sure the scratched area is sufficiently dry before moving to the next step. Using the clear nail polish bottle’s brush, carefully apply a thin layer of the clear polish over the scratch. The nail polish should be enough to thoroughly cover the scratch, but not too heavily. Afterward, carefully remove any excess nail polish with nail polish remover lightly dabbed from a clean cloth.”

Removing fine scratches

Auto blog ItStillRuns.com meanwhile published a post mentioning other ways to erase fine scratches in the windshield. In their write-up they suggested the use of metal polish to get rid of pesky fine scratches on auto glass. Windshield wiki 

“Step 1 - Clean the scratch on the car glass window and the area surrounding it with a soft, damp cloth. Step 2 - Dry the scratched area of the car window with a lint-free towel. Step 3 - Apply a small amount of metal polish to a dry, soft cloth. Step 4 - Buff the metal polish back and forth with the cloth the entire length of the scratch. Buff the polish into the scratch with the cloth until it disappears.”

The Detroit-based windshield technicians organization says if the scratch marks are deeper, then the best recourse is to let a certified autoglass professional erase the unsightly marks.
